Green Day - Nuclear Family - [Animated Music Video] Contest Winner
Q&A WITH WINNER KYLE STEIN
Q&A WITH WINNER KYLE STEIN
IN: Tell us a little bit about yourself, where you grew up, went to school, etc..
I grew up in Horsham PA and am currently a Studio Art major at the University of Pittsburgh. I've been drawing for longer than I can remember, and I've recently been experimenting with Adobe Flash. I create web-comics (and now animations!) for a site called The Dream Block in my spare time.
IN: When did you first get into Green Day? Are they your favorite band?
I first remember listening to Green Day when I was about 8 years old or so. My brother would listen to Dookie and Insomniac, and I thought it was awesome. (I also loved to look at the cover art for Dookie.) They've remained my favorite band ever since.
IN: Tell us about how you learned to do video/graphic editing? Your winning entry looks so professional.
Thank you! I haven't actually had any film/animation training of any kind. I guess my understanding of visuals and story structure came from constantly drawing comics throughout my childhood. The Nuclear Family video is actually my first complete animation - anything I've done before that has basically been experimental.
IN: How does it feel to know out of all the submissions, the band actually saw yours and picked it as their favorite?
"Mmm... wonderful!" Seriously, I can't believe it. That's really all I was hoping for - that Green Day would actually watch my video. But for them to pick it as the overall winner... unbelievable! I wasn't even sure if animation was allowed.
IN: Are you somewhat of a celebrity where you live now?
That would be something! But no, I'm not. I guess I was somewhat known for my art in school, but that's about it.
IN: What is your next project? Do you plan on using your Cannon Digital camera?
I'm hoping to make some more Green Day animations! It seems like everyone really enjoyed the Nuclear Family video and it was fun to make, although it was a ton of work. I really appreciate the camera prize, but I would've been just as happy with the signed box set! I don't do much filming... but I may be able to find someone who can make good use of it.
IN: Have you seen the band live?
Yes, I have - they are amazing live. Everyone should go see them live at some point. It's totally worth it.
IN: What is your favorite Green Day album?
That's really hard to say. I love all of them for different reasons. Nimrod has always been a personal favorite, but overall, as much as I love all their older stuff that I grew up listening to, American Idiot might be my favorite. Every song on that album is amazing.
