It was one of those right place, right time situations. Chris Dugan and his partner, Willie Samuels, had been recording local punk, metal and assorted bands for a couple of years at their Nu-Tone Studio in Pittsburg, Calif. (east of Berkeley/Oakland), when their paths crossed that of the best-known rocker in the area—Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. Armstrong had (and still has) his own record label, Adeline Records, and in 1999 he tapped Dugan to come to his home studio to record a few songs for a band he was producing, The Criminals. As the sun went down behind the Showground stands at Sydney’s Olympic Park, Soundwave headliners Green Day took to the stage. This was the band that most in the crowd had come to see. Finally, the main event had arrived!
The boys kicked things off with ’99 Revolutions’ before launching into ‘Know Your Enemy.’ The opening part of the show was frenetic. However, they did slow things down with ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ and ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends.’ Old favourites ‘Longview’ and ‘When I Come Around’ got things going again and had the crowd jumping up and down like it was 1994.

Green Day played a secret show in a pub in Sydney, Australia last night (February 20). See above to watch the band perform 'Brain Stew' now. The gig, which took place at Captain Cook Hotel in the Australian city, was announced just hours before it began with fans forced to dash to the venue in order to gain entry.

TWITTER blew-up, jealousy overflowed and lifelong memories were made for a couple of hundred people who saw Green Day play a surprise gig in a tiny Sydney pub last night.
A shock wave swept through the Sydney rock community when the band tweeted at 10.17pm details of a surprise free gig at The Captain Cook Hotel in Paddington under an hour before it started.
Shocked fans rubbed their eyes and their hearts skipped a beat as they processed the almost unreal message.
With no time to waste they swerved through traffic and ran through the streets to make it inside before the little pub filled
