...Then taxes are raised elsewhere. Prices of manufacturing weapons and supply for law enforcement and military increase. Then they are under-armed, unarmed, or again taxes go up. All the while the person who wants to acquire a weapon illegally and harm someone is entirely unaffected if motivated. The government will not just pull the plug on guns. Not in our life time. You may see it get strict but not disappear. I would think Billie Joe realizes this but doesn’t count on you putting it all together. He is just throwing that stuff out there for the image and marketing of his product to build and maintain a loyal following. I’m not saying he doesn’t believe it but he knows a war on guns is a ridiculous notion as far as reality goes. I respect him as an entertainer and musician completely but he is not a policy maker or an economist. He should say what he wants. But everyone should think for themselves. Ok, I’m exhausted of it.
@fawfes403…I appreciate you hearing me out. And I feel you raise some great points. That’s why it is healthy and productive for us to discuss things that we don’t initially see eye to eye on. I don’t think Billie should be obligated to speak out on anything unless he wants to. But I also think everyone should realize that Green Day is a production. It’s a company like any other. It is very much like a reality show. Even if you love a reality show it is ok to say “oh well that part is obviously staged.” I agree that we need to figure out a way to reduce these violent outbursts where people are dying. I think it has a lot to do with people wanting the recognition that follows with their name and face being all over the media. Though the news doesn’t’ list this as a potential problem because it would work against their cause if they were not allowed to disclose the personal information. My original point about Billie Joe’s picture is that it is unsubstantiated information while he recently called for a war on guns. He doesn’t expect you to think this through. He knows how the world works. First, there are dozens of millions of guns both legal and illegal in the country. Even if you feel law abiding citizens should not have them, it is not feasible to expect they will not exist one day. I am all for tougher gun laws and policy reform. But the largest reason it is not realistic to ban weapons (war on guns) is that like any large industry, the economic back lash would be devastating. Large retailers, small businesses, and independent merchants depend on that industry. From Walmart to pawn shops to independent sellers to families that own shooting ranges and so on and so on. There is a complete market for apparel, accessories, and everything else. Many of these manufactures are the same that produce other goods or bring in consumers with these products and sell others as a result such as sporting goods stores like Academy and again, Walmart (who employees approximately 1.6 Million people). When those companies all start folding it is a domino effect on the economy. Also consider the tax revenue that is lost.
......And if you read the Rolling Stone review of Reading 2012 he takes what I consider a shot to U.S. fans that I did not see the need for. Again, he doesn’t say this shit for me, I am aware. And I read an article at one time of the group saying how a lot of people think the U.S. is the best country but it’s not. I am still searching for that, so until I find it, of course, don’t hold them to it. I am not saying he is unpatriotic. I am saying this is more about him marketing his image and fans not sorting through that. If you want to know how unreliable the picture source is, it’s so old that there is no email address, it informs the reader to contact them by mail at a physical address rather than email, and notice it fails to document Middle Eastern and Central American governments. It is intended to lead the viewer to its position. It is in no way reliable. It is not even clever. It is just garbage to mislead. When information is presented as rational analysis it is often not shocking even if it is impactful. I hope that answers some questions. I have never had a bigger hero. In the 90’s he was like the father I was missing through the music. But that doesn’t mean I have to agree with him. That’s what I learned from him, if nothing else.
...To your point that the kids did not just die of alcohol poisoning…that’s along the same lines as I was saying that he is jumping on current events to push his social views and market himself. Also, the 75,000 deaths per year related to alcohol are not all accidently self-inflicted much like the gun deaths listed were not all self-inflicted. Many people who died in relation to alcohol were innocent, and many were children. My point was, by numbers, using the provided example, alcohol far outweighs gun related deaths and Billie Joe does not seem to lash out. It’s an example. I would think he doesn’t because he likes alcohol. Whereas in the case of guns, which contribute to far less deaths (in the U.S.) he feels that the law should be change to fit his view. I am not trying to speak for him. I am explaining my observations. Why does he want to live in the U.S.? It is likely because he is rooted here and has vision for what he considers home. At least it is a place where that is allowed. You were right that I could not find some of the examples of his U.S. trash talking that I had seen in the past so I would like to admit that I cannot support that entirely. I can tell you that I found examples of where he said things on video if France 2005 (youtube) where he said the song was a fuck you to George W. Bush and he changed that to fuck to all politicians when I saw that tour in the states. That stands out to me somewhat...
@fawkes403 and Sadie.bell. You have brought up some valid points and asked me to clarify some things. That is fair enough. I will try to group together all of it from both your postings. It was never my intention to suggest Billie Joe is not allowed to express his opinion. If anything, I am in his court expressing my opinion. It is my belief that it should be welcomed to have discussion regarding differing points of view and even demonstrate criticism at another’s point of view. I did not just come to the site to attack Billie Joe’s point of view. I have been a fan for nearly 20 years going back to before the first time I saw them in 1995. I have agreed and disagreed many times with the beliefs of Billie and other members. I am currently an Idiot Club member to the point that I have participated in and even won contests. I only say this to validate my presence at this conversation. My intention is to say I have been reading this stuff for a large part of my life and am independent enough in my thinking to tell you that I believe he does this to market himself. I have never respected someone so much as a songwriter and musical artist. But as an individual I have come to be very disappointed with the way he uses his musical influence to get fans to agree with his personal views and its never enough. If you read it for enough years you will see it’s a bottomless pit. This is what he wants: to be the center of controversy and have people talk about him. I pointed it out in this open conversation because it appeared several people were not making the distinction between his rock star character and a normal person with an opinion. To your point that the kids did not just die of alcohol poisoning…that’s along the same lines as I was saying that he is jumping on current events to push his social views and market himself...
