My Comments
This appears to be a well-developed document with strongly supported material. If you read the fine print, this ad is a product of Handgun Control, Inc. who would later change their name to the Brady Campaign, over 11 years ago in 2001. This is a piece of rhetoric dug up for Billie Joe to use current events to endorse his own social views because he is limited by his egomaniacal nature while it also serves as the driving force behind his success. This guy is so full of shit he is pouring over like an out of control fountain. I wonder if he still remembers emphasizing his own words "Somebody shot the President" in a yell like fashion when playing 'Maria' in Dallas on the last spin with the American Idiot tour. Ironic since the President was shot in Dallas. Guns are obviously part of the problem in the recent tragedy. But that is not what this about. There is obviously so much more to it. As for the information provided in Billie Joe's picture, U.S. is nowhere near the top country for death rate by guns. Total deaths are different because of population. According to Wiki, there were 31,224 gun related deaths in 2007 while NBC reports that 75,000 people die each year in alcohol related deaths. Why was Billie Joe not raising hell about this? Because everyone would laugh at him and it would not help him sell records. Not to lose sight, something does need to be done. We need to take positive action which may include changing gun laws or other processes. But this picture posted here is of self-serving, outdated information distributed by an institution with a mission in the favor of its stance on a social issue. By the way, Billie Joe talks shit on stage about the United States when playing in other countries. Look it up. It helps him sell records. This is all related.
(Reply to Dan3siko) I would add, the media can report without disclosing the personal information. They chose not to show the the deceased children. They chose not to include particular details. My point is that I believe that for people that operate like this guy, it serves as a motivator that they will get this attention to the extreme that it is rewarding to them. In this particular case, the guy even bragged that he would get attention and gave hints at his crime before he did it. Gun laws could always be stricter and I won't disagree with that. But this would apply to law abiding citizens and not criminals. I respectively disagree with you in determining the source of motivation or means by which this was made possible. Violence did not begin with the right to bear arms just like it did not begin with the media. But when these guys are plannig to make a splash, I believe it has more to do with making headlines than it does with what weapon is most readily available. In either, we need to figure it out and get it corrected.
War on guns? How about a war on the media that makes heroes out of these people by blasting their face, name, resume, and legacy all over the place to inspire the other shit heads out there to do the same thing? Knowing they will get this notoriety is the same to these guys as winning an MVP award. The legality of the weapon was likely not the determining factor in what motivated this guy. I can agree, however, that my heart goes out to those affected.
