    For every band or fashion that’s generated controversy and polarization for ascending from the punk rock underground to mainstream cultural consciousness, Green Day’s the most successful on all fronts. So, OK, maybe they are the Alpha and Omega of punk poseurdom.

    However, unlike the majority of their contemporaries from the ’90s alterna-boom, Green Day continues to attract new fans. That’s why they are headlining their own arena tour instead of phoning in a set of nearly 20-year-old crowd-pleasers on the Warped Tour.

    Not only that, but as he displayed last night, front-man and co-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong is one of the few leading men with the awareness to address a Comcast Center crowd as his “crazy friends from New England.” Why do so many other performers assume Mansfield and Boston are the same place?
