This year marks the 20th anniversary of Lollapalooza, the celebrated festival that has come a long way in the past two decades. It's evolved from an alternative music tour to a cross-genre mainstay in the summer festival circuit, where concertgoers happily brave the 100-plus-degree heat index with a gourmet hot dog in one hand and a pint of locally brewed beer in the other. A lot has happened during the history of this iconic event, so as its birthday approaches, we take a look back at Lollapalooza's most memorable moments.

Tim Mosenfelder: "Green Day played the Lollapalooza tour in 1994 and returned to the festival in 2010. Green Day has always been one of my favorites to photograph, thanks to frontman Billie Joe's animated antics while on stage. He has a wild approach to performing that has always surprised me, even after 15 years."

I’m first introduced to Green Day bassist and Fender signature artist Mike Dirnt over the phone as he sits by an inflatable pool watching his toddler son splash around. A few months later, in the middle of a massive Green Day tour that was being recorded for a future live DVD (March 2011’s Awesome as F**k), we meet in person and rush through a quick interview before soundcheck. Fast forward to summer 2011, and we catch up again by phone for a marathon interview as he runs post-rehearsal errands in Oakland, Calif.
