Green Day fans attending Thursday night's performance of the just-opened Broadway musical "American Idiot" got an extra-special treat following the final bow: The veteran rock trio jumped onstage for a surprise performance.

"This is my first night on Broadway," frontman Billie Joe Armstrong announced as his two bandmates — bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool — took their places behind him. They quickly ripped into a blistering performance of "American Idiot," the first single from the album of the same name that serves as the basis for the musical.

As you can see by this list, Green Day are no “minority” when it comes to banding together to help save the environment. But instead of paying environmental causes mere lip service, they’ve paired up with the Natural Resources Defense Council to try to make a real impact on the way we live.

The pairing sees the band encouraging their fans to do everything from lobbying congress to create more “green” jobs to letting President Obama know that you support clean energy. (We hear Billie Joe Armstrong has got the guy on BlackBerry Messenger).

Furthermore, you can visit the collaborative

    Ruzzi was just

Green Day's 'American Idiot' Musical Is Political And Personal
'It's about people becoming lost and just trying to find their way,' Billie Joe Armstrong tells MTV News.

By now, you're probably aware that Green Day's 2004 album American Idiot was a fairly, uh, political affair. And while the Broadway version of the record doesn't exactly shy away from the topic, it also reveals a side of the music that most probably never realized was there in the first place: the personal.

"I think, politically, American Idiot, when we were writing it, it was trying to make sense out of a big mess,"

The idea of a punk rock musical may strike some folks as patently absurd. How can you take one art form -- gritty, rebellious, brutally minimalist -- and marry it to another -- polished, family-friendly, harmonically complex -- without crippling them both? Some fans, in other words, are simply never going to warm to the idea of a Green Day musical, no matter how good it is.

But they're missing out. American Idiot, which opened Tuesday night at Broadway's St. James Theatre after a run at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, is about as rock'n'roll as musicals get.
