Green Day frontman's weeklong stint resulted in Broadway musical's highest ticket sales to date.
He already wowed the critics, or us anyway, and now Billie Joe Armstrong has wowed Broadway pundits, too — they used the word "boffo," which is always a good sign — as his weeklong stint as St. Jimmy in the "American Idiot" musical led to record receipts for the six-month-old production.
According to Variety, "Idiot" raked in nearly $1.1 million in ticket sales last week — up $600,000 from the previous week — a new

Pop & Hiss had a case of New York-envy this week, when Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, a California boy, no less, had a brief stay on Broadway. Armstrong, filling in for star Tony Vincent, took over this week the role of drug-pushing evil-doer St. Jimmy in "American Idiot," the theatrical production inspired by the 2004 Green Day album of the same name. Times staffer Pamela Wilson, however, made the cross-country trip, and filed this guest post for Pop & Hiss on her reactions to Armstrong's jump to Broadway.

If this whole rock-and-roll frontman thing doesn't pan out, Billie Joe Armstrong could have a pretty decent career on Broadway. That much was clear on Wednesday night (September 29), when he took the stage as St. Jimmy in "American Idiot," the big-budget play based on the smash album he and his Green Day mates released back in 2005.
