"You guys wanna hear a hot number?,” Billie Joe Armstrong, singer and guitarist for the platinum selling punk band Green Day, asked rhetorically midway through the band’s surprise show at the Echoplex in Echo Park on Monday night.
In fact, they were all hot numbers. Over the course of two adrenaline-soaked hours, bouncers pulled sweaty, overwhelmed fans -- many heat-exhausted from waiting in a thick queue and seeing a big band in a small space -- out of the crowd.
As the Bay Area-born punk band rolled through its catalog of bangers and delivered nine new songs from its forthcoming trio of studio albums, “Uno,” “Dos” and “Tre,” the heat both onstage and off peaked. One big bouncer carried a woozy girl past Armstrong and across the stage like he was lugging a tree trunk.
