  • Green Day have picked up loads of praise along their career, but the rockers don't stay content for long. So a few years ago, when the band was approached by director Michael Mayer to adapt their album American Idiot into a musical, the band eagerly took on the project, and the play opened in April 2010.

The new documentary Broadway Idiot tracks Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool as they took their music to a new stage. In this exclusive clip, Armstrong leads the crew to rerecord "21 Guns" in theatrical fashion as they ready the musical for its premiere.
"When we started filming our documentary, we had amazing access inside the creative process of the Broadway team," Doug Hamilton, the film's director, tells Rolling Stone. "But it wasn't until a few months later, when Billie Joe Armstrong opened up and invited us into the private recording studios of Green Day, that we really got to see inside the process by which Billie Joe, Mike and Tré create the Green Day sound."

Broadway Idiot will be released October 11th in theatres and On Demand. Pre-order available on iTunes.

  • Green Day frontman will play Leighton Meester's boyfriend in new indie movie

Billie Joe Armstrong is headed to the big screen in a big way. The Green Day frontman is set to star alongside Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester in an upcoming indie drama Like Sunday, Like Rain, Deadline reports.

The film comes from actor/director Frank Whaley (Pulp Fiction, Ray Donovan) and tells the story of a struggling musician, played by Meester, who becomes the guardian of a 12-year-old music prodigy. Armstrong will play Meester's boyfriend in the movie.

Filming for Like Sunday, Like Rain is underway in New York.

Over the years, Armstrong has appeared in minor roles in other movies including Penny Marshall's Riding in Cars With Boys and Judd Apatow's This Is 40. This December, he'll also make a cameo in Anchorman: The Legend Continues.

Aside from the new acting gig, Armstrong has two documentaries about Green Day coming up. ¡Cuatro! explores the band's writing and recording process while creating 2012's ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré! album trilogy and Broadway Idiot, due out in October, traces the adaptation of Green Day's American Idiot album into a Broadway production.
