Billie Joe Armstrong Leads 'American Idiot' To Record Box-Office Numbers

Green Day frontman's weeklong stint resulted in Broadway musical's highest ticket sales to date.

He already wowed the critics, or us anyway, and now Billie Joe Armstrong has wowed Broadway pundits, too — they used the word "boffo," which is always a good sign — as his weeklong stint as St. Jimmy in the "American Idiot" musical led to record receipts for the six-month-old production.

According to Variety, "Idiot" raked in nearly $1.1 million in ticket sales last week — up $600,000 from the previous week — a new record for the show. Its previous high was $870,000, set in June. Attendance was also up, as Armstrong and the cast performed before a house at 93 percent capacity.

All in all, thanks to Armstrong, "American Idiot" was the week's third-biggest play, trailing only venerable productions "Wicked" ($1.5 million) and "The Lion King" ($1.2 million) at the box office.

Variety added that the sales spike for "Idiot" was "particularly impressive, given the last-minute nature of the Armstrong appearance." He announced he'd be appearing as St. Jimmy — replacing actor Tony Vincent in the role — on Sunday (September 26), two days before his debut at New York's St. James Theatre.

Armstrong wrapped his stint in the production on Sunday, signing off with a flurry of tweets that promised he'd "f--- sh-- up" during his final performance, and then summing up his time on the stage thusly: "Broadway was such a great experience. Best cast ever. Hopefully I'll do St. J again. If you haven't seen ['American Idiot'], f---ing see it! It's great!"
