Rock On: Davey Havok Is St. Jimmy in American Idiot; Justin Guarini Is Will, Van Hughes Is Jesus of Suburbia
Davey Havok, the lead singer of the rock band AFI, steps into the role of St. Jimmy in Broadway's American Idiot starting March 1. He's one of several new leads at the St. James Theatre.
Havok succeeds Green Day front man Armstrong and plays a two-week run
in the rock musical inspired by the Green Day punk album of the same
name. (Grammy and Academy Award Award-winning singer-songwriter Melissa
Etheridge also recently played a week-long stint as the dark alter ego
known as St. Jimmy. The role was created by Tony Vincent, who is heard
on the cast album.)
Also on March 1, the Idiot cast welcomes "American Idol" finalist and recent Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown star Justin Guarini to the role of Will (succeeding Michael Esper); Van Hughes (9 to 5, Hairspray)
to the role of Johnny (succeeding Tony winner John Gallagher Jr.); and
Libby Winters, who made her Broadway debut in the ensemble of American Idiot, to the role of the Extraordinary Girl (succeeding Christina Sajous, who left Feb. 26).
(Armstrong and original cast members Gallagher and Esper exited the show after the Feb. 27 evening performance.)
