Review: Green Day get political, goofy, nostalgic and truly inspiring in raucous Phoenix tour launch

Billie Joe Armstrong did not chant "No Trump! No KKK! No fascist USA!" when Green Day launched their U.S. tour in support of last year's aptly titled "Revolution Radio" at Talking Stick Resort Arena last night the way he did when they played the American Music Awards in November.

But he certainly wasn't averse to inserting some politics into the mix, coming out of "American Idiot," the title track that put the men of "Dookie" back on top in 2004, with a shout of "F--k you, Donald Trump!" And I know there are those who would argue that Armstrong should shut up and play his guitar. But he was playing, and it felt like a perfectly natural extension of the song itself, in which he memorably weighs in on the climate of 2004 with "I'm not a part of a redneck agenda / Now everybody do the propaganda / And sing along to the age of paranoia."

The show had barely started when Armstrong slipped a lengthy plea for peace and unity into the middle of another track from that same album, "Letterbomb."

"Tonight, we're all here together," he testified. "And we're looking for something. ... We're looking for something positive. We're looking for some f--king love and some passion. Some compassion. And we're looking for the truth. No more lies. No more corruption. ... This is reality. This is us together right now. No matter what background you come from, no matter what religion or if you're an atheist, if you're a liberal or you're conservative, at some point we have to look at each other and take care of each other and show some f--king love and respect. Because rock and roll is gonna change the f--king world right now."
