09-01 - GREEN DAY EXCEEDS ALL EXPECTATIONS - IRVINE

It seemed as if the Green Day Twittyerverse was exploding between 8:30-11:15pm last night. Everyone that had a phone and two fingers was punching away furiously to friends, Facebook or Twitter about one of the best concerts of the decade. There were nearly a dozen “Oh my God, you’ll never believe what song Green Day is playing right now!” moments.
Yes, of course this sounds like an overstatement, but it was this feeling that swept the crowd during the show and stayed with us on our drive home. You don’t have to believe me, just search Twitter and you’ll see what I mean. Every single concert goer had that after-sex glow as they made the long walk out of Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Among the people going nuts was tennis star Serena Williams. She was Tweeting all night, basically narrating the entire show for her friends around the globe. Apparently, she’s a huge rock fan. Who knew?
It all started when dirty, beer drinking bunny hobbled on stage. As if he’d just woke from a night in a dumpster, he wobbled around the stage interacting with the audience. It was almost like one of the roadies found an old, thrashed bunny suit and said, “Hey, I’m gonna go out on stage with this on…” And the band said, “Sure, go nuts.”
From the moment that Green Day hit the stage, you could tell Billie Joe was energized and this wasn’t going to be any ordinary show. The giant LCD backdrop, the balls of fire, and perfectly choreographed explosions added the right elements to every song without ever upstaging the band.
About a third way through the show, Billie started bringing fans up on stage. Yes, he’s done this a million times, but for some reason, this time seemed a little more special, and a whole lot funnier. He looked down at security and said, “I’m Billy Joe f**cking Armstrong, I’ll do anything I want!” Clearly, security believed him.
An Asian guy, probably in his early 40s, was called out from the pit. When he finally made it through the pit and up to Billie Joe, he stood next to him, almost dumbfounded, and grabbed the mic. “This is Billie f’ing Joe! (insert long pause) Billie f’ing Joe!” He’d step back a few feet then as if we didn’t hear it the first time, he repeated, “This is Billie Joe Armstrong!” The crowd erupted as expected. Billy grabbed the mic and graciously motioned to this awe-struck man that the only way to get off stage was to dive back into the crowd. And that’s just what he did. He grabbed his shades from neck of his shirt, slid them on his face and went running right off the edge of the stage. This was just the beginning.
Throughout the evening, Billie Joe made it crystal clear where the band was from and where they called home. “I live in Cali-f**cking-fornia!” I’m so happy to be back in California! Los Angeles County, Orange County… and surrounding areas… oh, and my friends in Riverside!” This was a reoccurring theme all night. Billie was clearly, and honestly, happy to be home. The crowd responded.
It was somewhere around “Geek Stink Breath” that the band members grabbed high-pressure water hoses and squirted the crowd. Everyone in the first 50 rows got nailed.
It was clear to everyone that Billie was having fun during every song. How often does a band’s front man put down his guitar and do a head stand? That’s precisely what Mr. Armstrong did during “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams.”
After a 38 song, three-hour set with two encores, the exhausted and waterlogged crowd was treated to the final song of the night. What else… “Good Riddance (The time of your life)”
Working in radio, one of the perks is going to concerts and I’ve been to a few. Green Day turned up the knob to 11 on this one.

Billie Joe Armstrong and company reinforce their scrappy punk status at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, inviting fans to come on stage and sing along.
Heads up, Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman: You may be in for some unexpected company come November.
“I’m running for governor of California!” Billie Joe Armstrong revealed Tuesday night at Irvine’s Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, where Green Day played one of the final dates of its U.S. tour in support of last year’s “21st Century Breakdown.”
That this announcement came not long after the frontman declared (in slightly saltier language) that he’s a rock star and can therefore do whatever the heck he wants was no cause for worry: Armstrong is a benevolent despot who encourages fans to join him onstage and launches free merchandise into the cheap seats with an air-powered T-shirt gun.
The singer’s introduction into state politics would present another problem, though: the early retirement of what might be America’s best live band.
Green Day is riding as high as it ever has this year, thanks in large part to the success of “American Idiot,” the Broadway adaptation of its 2004 album of the same name. And in Irvine the Oakland-based outfit — filled out to a six-piece with auxiliary players on guitars, keyboards and other instruments — seemed determined to prove that its theatrical streak runs deep.
Towering columns of fire erupted behind drummer Tré Cool during “Give Me Novacaine.” A video-screen backdrop depicted the ruins of a city skyline in “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” And confetti sprayed skyward as the band concluded its main set with an accordion-enriched version of its 2000 hit “Minority.”
Yet Tuesday’s three-hour show also emphasized the vitality of Green Day’s connection to its scrappy punk-scene roots. In older songs such as “Burnout” and “When I Come Around,” both from the group’s 1994 breakout, “Dookie,” Armstrong and his bandmates did what they were doing long before they graduated to arenas and stadiums, bashing out their hard-pop tunes with fat-free efficiency. Only the energy had been upped to suit the needs of a capacity crowd of more than 15,000.
In another nod to those cozy dive-bar days, Armstrong repeatedly invited audience members to take over his vocal duties, most memorably in “Longview,” Green Day’s first big single. The frontman’s initial pick flamed out after one verse, but her successor sang the rest of the song with an awestruck enthusiasm that collectivized the band’s superstardom while reinforcing it at the same time.
When the young man finished, he held out the microphone toward Armstrong, but Armstrong declined to take it back, obviously enjoying the sight of an ordinary kid temporarily granted extraordinary power. Following his idol’s earlier example, the fan mounted Cool’s drum riser and then leaped off it as Armstrong looked on approvingly.
Talk about noblesse oblige.
09-01 - ANTI CANCER TELETHON
LOS ANGELES (AP) — George Clooney, Will Smith and Gwyneth Paltrow will join an impressive list of stars taking part in September's "Stand Up to Cancer" telethon airing on major networks.
Other celebrities announced Wednesday include Denzel Washington, Renee Zellweger, Kathy Bates and Richard Branson. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Lance Armstrong and Elizabeth Edwards were previously announced as participants.
Performers will include Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, Neil Diamond, The Edge, Herbie Hancock, Lady Antebellum and Leona Lewis. Queen Latifah, Martina McBride and Stevie Wonder were among those already announced.
Clooney, in particular, is a fundraising heavyweight. At Sunday's Emmy Awards, he accepted the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for efforts on behalf of victims of this year's earthquake in Haiti, the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia and the Sept. 11 attacks.
"Stand Up to Cancer" is aimed at raising money to speed up innovative cancer research, according to movie producer Laura Ziskin ("Spider-Man"), who is a cancer survivor and co-founder of the Stand Up to Cancer group.
The telethon is returning for a second time after the 2008 event helped deliver more than $100 million for research.
This year's telethon will be simulcast commercial-free (8 p.m.-9 p.m. EDT) on Sept. 10 by ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC as well as a variety of cable channels.
Cat Deeley, host of Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance," will host a half-hour pre-show (7:30 p.m. EDT) available widely online at major network sites as well as other sites and portals including E! Online, Hulu and YouTube.
"A donation of any size brings scientists one step closer to a cure," Ziskin said in a statement Wednesday. All public donations go to cancer research, the group said.
The American Association for Cancer Research, the scientific partner of Stand Up to Cancer, administers grants and provides scientific oversight in partnership with a Stand Up to Cancer advisory committee.
Stand Up to Cancer is a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a nonprofit TV and film industry group that supports programs addressing health, education and social issues.
Telethon viewers will be asked to pledge donations by phone or on the Stand Up to Cancer website.
Besides the broadcast networks, Bio, Discovery Health, E!, G4, HBO, HBO Latino, MLB Network, mun2, Showtime, Smithsonian Channel, The Style Network, TV One and VH1 also will simulcast the event.

Covers of rock classics like Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." Massive 20,000-person sing alongs. Pyro, confetti, and a beer-guzzling Drunk Bunny: Green Day's summer tour is a total blowout. And Saturday night in Denver it got even better: The Bay Area punks debuted a never-before-heard song. Watch video below.
The tune, "Cigarettes and Valentines," is a power-punk jam that sounds more like Green Day's ragtag roots than their rock operas of late (see American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown). Which makes sense: According to Punk News the song was the title track from the band's planned follow-up to 2000's Warning, which was scrapped after the master tapes were stolen.
And it gets better: Before the song's performance, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told the audience that the band's set that night—a two-hour-plus punk marathon—was being recorded for a live album, leading to speculation that "Cigarettes and Valentines" will finally see release with the upcoming effort.
