08-19 - TORONTO SUN

No concert is utterly perfect but if there's a benchmark for today's rock shows look no further than Green Day.

The California punk rock band didn't disappoint and made fans feel they got their money's worth and more with a spectacular three-hour non-stop marathon of favorites at Toronto's Molson Canadian Amphitheatre Wednesday night.

Still touring behind 21st Century Breakdown, Green Day brought out all the stops - and pyrotechnics galore - when not bringing a myriad of fans onstage to dance, sing lead or be saved by the preacher/singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong.

Now a six-piece touring outfit, the band kicked off the roughly three-dozen song set list with the new album's title track as the small but manic Armstrong got the nearly sold-out crowd up and pumped.

The biggest challenge often is keeping that energy high, yet fans never sat down the rest of the night, hopping around to When I Come Around, belting out Know Your Enemy or the ballad Boulevard Of Broken Dreams which Armstrong let them take lead on.

"We're going to play all f------ night long," he said about 30 minutes in, a cliche rarely delivered on in the current climate of 80-minute to 90-minute "productions." By the time they rounded out the 150-minute main set, that statement was fact.

Still full of jokes and sophomoric hijinx, Armstrong, drummer Tre Cool and bassist Mike Dirnt tore through the older material with the same youthful abandon circa their Dookie breakthrough in 1994. The album was represented with Basket Case, Burnout, She and When I Come Around that had the age-spanning audience hopping. These were eclipsed by Longview when Armstrong brought out a fan from the audience to sing the entire song. Despite destroying his belt in the process, the guy delivered the goods and left with Armstrong's guitar as a thank you.

Despite smashing a guitar into the steps leading to Cool's drum kit at one point, Armstrong was having a lot of fun, bringing up a 9-year-old during East Jesus Nowhere and having him collapse on stage like a televangelist with his congregation. Asking the boy's name - Sawyer - Armstrong grinned before riffing some of Rush's Tom Sawyer. "Sawyer, you just gave me a gift," he said laughing.

Overall, Green Day mixed the old with the new quite well, nailing an old-school middle portion featuring Nice Guys Finish Last, the hillbilly-tinged Dominated Love Slave (with Cool and Armstrong switching spots for) and J.A.R. These seemed to complement the newer nuggets like St. Jimmy, the lengthy Jesus Of Suburbia and the foot-stomping American Idiot. A Canadian flag with "Canadian Idiot" written on it by fans was something Armstrong clung to throughout the evening.

While a slight lull in the proceedings took place during a medley of the Rolling Stones' Satisfaction, Monty Python's Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life and The Beatles' Hey Jude, Green Day hit the homestretch looking no worse for wear on 21 Guns and Minority. And by the time the group bid good riddance to the faithful, most probably felt they just ran a marathon.

MULTI-PLATINUM ROCK BAND WILL PERFORM “LAST OF THE AMERICAN GIRLS” WITH THE BROADWAY CAST OF AMERICAN IDIOT

ON THE 50-YARD LINE

Guitarist Slash and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger Also To Perform Tailgate Concert

The team announced today that the multi-platinum rock band Green Day will perform live with the Broadway cast of the smash-hit, Tony Award-winning American Idiot to open the Jets' 2010 regular season in their new stadium. The halftime show will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display.

The team also announced that Slash, former lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, will perform a tailgate concert featuring lead singer Myles Kennedy and two special guests — Nicole Scherzinger, lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls and Dancing with the Stars champion, and Jason Bonham of Led Zeppelin — pregame on the plaza just outside the stadium. Scherzinger will also perform the National Anthem. Opening night entertainment is presented by Bud Light, MasterCard, Pepsi, HBO GO and MAX GO.

Green Day, which is singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool, are currently touring in support of their eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown. Produced by Butch Vig, 21st Century Breakdown was released by Reprise Records on May 15, 2009, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart as well as on the Rock, Active Rock, and Alternative charts. 21st Century Breakdown won the GRAMMY® for Best Rock Album at the 52nd Grammy Awards earlier this year.

Green Day won two GRAMMY® Awards for the groundbreaking rock opera American Idiot, which sold more than 12 million copies worldwide. The band collaborated with one of the theatre's most acclaimed creative teams, led by Michael Mayer, the Tony Award-winning director of Spring Awakening; Tom Kitt, two-time Tony Award-winning composer and orchestrator; Steven Hoggett, Olivier Award-winning choreographer, and producers Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman to bring this explosive, iconic album to the stage.

The smash-hit, Tony Award-winning musical American Idiot tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Their quest for true meaning in a post 9/11 world leads them on the most exhilarating journey of the Broadway season.

The Jets' 2010 regular season kicks off when they host the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. ESPN Radio will be distributing light bands that glow green to fans entering the stadium. Jets opening night entertainment is produced by GameDay Entertainment LLC, Executive Producer: David Saltz.

08-18 - GREEN DAY COMPETE FOR VMA SPECIAL EFFECTS

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards are fast approaching, which means that in only a few weeks you'll be treated to an excellent night of performances and appearances by the likes of Kanye West, Drake, Florence and the Machine and Deadmau5 (who will serve as the house DJ at the show). While people tend to remember the classic performances and the unhinged moments, the coveted Moonman is the reason why people show up and tune in. This year, there are 16 categories wherein some of the biggest music stars in the universe will compete for the coolest trophy in awards shows. Today, we take a look at the nominees in the Best Special Effects category.

Though it's a technical category, some of the biggest and most iconic videos in history have scored victories for Best Special Effects. They include eye-poppers like a-ha's "Take On Me" (1986), Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" (1987), Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight Tonight" (1996), Outkast's "Hey Ya!" (2004) and Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" (2009). The latter will compete for the prize once again in this category, this time for her intense "Bad Romance." Her competition this year is incredibly stiff, featuring VMA veterans Eminem (whose "Not Afraid" features him in flight) and Green Day (who channeled "Take On Me" in "21st Century Breakdown"). It also features Muse (whose "Uprising" is the token rock epic involved) and newcomer Dan Black (whose "Symphonies" is a trippy stream-of-consciousness jump between some classic film tropes).

The effects in each category are all amazing, and this may be one of the most balanced competitions in the entire evening. While Black's entry is impressive and you can never overlook Eminem, it seems like Gaga has the upper hand when it comes to everything that goes on in "Bad Romance."

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12.

08-18 - BOSTON

More importantly, Green Day proved itself still capable of doing what punk bands are supposed to do, which is speak for and to youth culture. “Are We the Waiting,’’ “Give Me Novacaine,’’ and “21 Guns’’ made adolescent turmoil feel like Us vs. Them, with a specific focus on the fact that there’s an Us, not just a You.

There was a small but steady trickle of audience members onto the stage all night, one of whom sang “Longview’’ in a faceless green bodysuit and was rewarded with Billie Joe Armstrong’s guitar. And their devotion went well beyond the hits and recent material, as evidenced by the throng of kids onstage who knew all the words to the early “2000 Light Years Away.’’

But despite its mantle of generational spokesmen, Green Day avoided the plague of self-seriousness. Everybody donned silly headgear for the breakneck and goofy “King for a Day,’’ and biting songs like “Holiday,’’ “American Idiot,’’ and the slashing stomp of “East Jesus Nowhere’’ were exciting, rather than turgid hectoring.

The concert’s most telling song might have been “Know Your Enemy.’’ On stage, it was never more clear that it was nothing more than a single riff repeated ad infinitum, and it never mattered less. Green Day had enough sharp fire to put it over without a hitch.

Fueled by a hardcore righteousness, opening act AFI had a dramatic intensity that resulted in a broken microphone and stand but didn’t preclude a sense of humor, as evidenced by the gorilla-suited man who pretended to wrestle pompadoured glam-punk frontman Davey Havok

08-17 - BOSTON HERALD

For every band or fashion that’s generated controversy and polarization for ascending from the punk rock underground to mainstream cultural consciousness, Green Day’s the most successful on all fronts. So, OK, maybe they are the Alpha and Omega of punk poseurdom.

However, unlike the majority of their contemporaries from the ’90s alterna-boom, Green Day continues to attract new fans. That’s why they are headlining their own arena tour instead of phoning in a set of nearly 20-year-old crowd-pleasers on the Warped Tour.

Not only that, but as he displayed last night, front-man and co-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong is one of the few leading men with the awareness to address a Comcast Center crowd as his “crazy friends from New England.” Why do so many other performers assume Mansfield and Boston are the same place?
