08-13 - GREEN DAY MAKES A HOMECOMING

In an era where downloaded singles far outpace the sales of complete CDs, putting out a concept album seems a quaint, if not futile, way to present new music.
If any act can restore the luster of the complete album, it may be Green Day, the Bay Area-based band whose current tour brings it to HP Pavilion on Tuesday.
The band's "21st Century Breakdown," released earlier this year, continues in the tradition of the band's Grammy-winning "American Idiot" album, with key characters, political themes and a compelling story that is told track by track, with elaborate artwork to further illustrate its themes.
"There are three different acts to this record," says bassist Mike Dirnt. "There's a lot of content. We almost treated it like a vinyl record, therefore giving more for people to hold on to and call their own."

08-11 - GREEN DAY'S PRANKS FOR KAISER CHIEFS

GREEN
The American Idiot hitmakers are currently midway through a massive global trek and they were joined by the Kaiser Chiefs, who opened for them at a string of dates across the U.S.
The bands played their last gig together on Saturday (08Aug09) in New Orleans, Louisiana - but the rock trio didn't let their stagemates escape their tradition of playing jokes on their support acts.
Kaiser Chiefs drummer Nick Hodgson explains: "Every time when they have support bands, the final night they sort of prank the band. We got off really lightly I think. If you look at
"When we started (hit track) I Predict a Riot, this band came on and then Green Day came on, and they were playing cowbells. It was a shock. I just wonder whether the people of New Orleans think that's our regular type of performance."
And Hodgson admits that wasn't the only gag they were subjected to - their rock pals also covered all their instruments in toilet roll.
He adds, "Toilet Paper. They T.P.'d (toilet paper-ed) us. (They covered our) drums, instruments. It was live on stage."

08-10 - INSIDE GREEN DAY'S PUNK EXPLOSION

With Green Day in the throes of their 21st Century Breakdown tour, Rolling Stone caught up backstage with Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt before their concert at Philadelphia’s Spectrum for an exclusive look at the trio’s latest and craziest tour yet. After years on the road, Green Day still know how to have a good time, stocking their area backstage with Rock Band and tequila. “I get more fun where I drink tequila,” Cool tells RS. The band kicked off their tour with a July 3rd concert in Seattle, with the band performing material from Breakdown, their most complex and ambitious album to date.

08-10 - BERKELEY REP STARTS REHEARSAL ON AMERICAN IDIOT

"Welcome to a new kind of tension."
It's among the opening lyrics from Green Day's "American Idiot," the post-punk rock opera about disillusionment, love and loss among young adults in post-9/11 America. The phrase might also describe what's happening inside the rehearsal hall at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, which is staging the world premiere of a musical based on Green Day's landmark, Grammy-winning album.
Adapted by Green Day vocalist-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and "Spring Awakening's" Tony-winning director Michael Mayer, "American Idiot" is a most unusual new musical. There is no traditional book, as the show's text is drawn from the 2004 Green Day album, its liner notes and several other songs from the band, including a few tracks from the Bay Area band's new CD, "21st Century Breakdown."

08-10 - RIP PAUL DOMINGUEZ
Today our hearts go out to The Mystic Knights Of The Cobra. Guitar player Paul Dominguez aka "Call me Donnie Cobra" tragically drowned yesterday. Having toured with the Foxboro Hot Tubs he is someone we consider part of the Green Day family. He will be deeply missed.

08-10 - GREEN DAY REVIEW AT MSG

EXPLOSIONS. Pillars of flame. Stagediving. A fan invited to sing backing vocals.
And that's all just in the second song . . .
Long known as one of the most entertaining live bands around, Green Day say they want to match Bruce Springsteen for the scale of their concerts with new album 21st Century Breakdown.
Sure enough, like Bruce, the punk trio play for three hours. However, even in his long career, it's unlikely that The Boss has covered Lulu's Shout while draped in a pink feather boa thrown on stage.
Rated was the only British publication invited to see the Californian rockers before their tour hits the UK in October - and we can report that it's one of the most dazzling spectaculars of the year.
It's hard to think of other bands who have both the intelligent anger that fuels much of their music, and enough showbiz genes to get 10-year-old fan Trevor on stage and pretend to "drive out your demons, young Trevor" as singer Billie Joe Armstrong plays a phoney TV preacher.

08-09 - GREEN DAY AND AN EPIC ROCK REVIVAL

If Billie Joe Armstrong ever decides to leave the music thing behind, he has a promising future as a wild-eyed evangelist. Or a guylinered drill instructor.
The Green Day frontman barked, pleaded, commanded and even saved a few souls during the pop-punk band's Saturday night show at Toyota Center. He lorded over a two-and-a-half-hour set that featured a drunk pink rabbit, sax solos, toilet-paper cannons, jumbo water guns, maximum crowd participation and riffs on -- seriously -- wedding staple Shout.
It was epic, ridiculously entertaining and often brilliant. Armstrong spun on his back, mooned the crowd and laid flat on the floor while singing Tom Petty's Free Fallin'. Just watching him work was exhausting.
A huge video backdrop flashed images of war and country and death. But for all the fireworks -- figuratively and literally -- Green Day's musical prowess made the biggest bang.
