Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena reopens in September amid a £26m redevelopment project.

The whole of the venue will be renovated over the coming months, including huge “sky needles” on top of the venue lighting up the Birmingham Skyline at night.

Fortunately, Sunday night’s performance at the Forecastle Festival in downtown Louisville, Ky. – the first in a string of three summer gigs leading up to the St. Paul show on Sept. 13 -- never got too messy, and ultimately proved this version of the Replacements is even better at playing it straight. But for a musical genre so driven by the beat, where lightning fast technique is a prerequisite for acceptance, the punk drummer rises above the rest. Unlike the guitar and bass players, drummers can't turn down their instrument or increase the distortion.

  • Drummer Tommy Ramone passed away Friday at the age of 65, and, as the last living founding member of iconic CBGB originals the Ramones, his passing feels that much more sad. Gone, a living touchstone to a music born of the primordial moment that gave birth to not just punk but so much of modern rock ’n’ roll. Because of the incredible influence they’ve had, it’s no surprise that the Ramones are one of the most covered bands ever. By our count, there have been somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 Ramones tribute albums released over the years.
