When “American Idiot” rolls into town at the Merriam Theatre in Philadelphia Feb. 12 through 17, expect to see a lot of people in the audience from Woodstown.

    Why?

    One word.

    Whatsername.

That’s who 2007 Woodstown High School graduate Alyssa DiPalma plays in the tour of Green Day’s hit Broadway musical.

“All of my friends from my hometown will be there. It should be a lot of fun,” she said.

“American Idiot” is a show DiPalma “totally fell in love with” when she saw it for the first time in New York City a few short years ago.

“I jumped at the chance to audition. It was really exciting,” said DiPalma, a graduate of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, adding that it was the role of Whatsername — a girl the main character Johnny meets in the city — that really got her attention.

“I said, “I’ve got to play that role,’” DiPalma said. “She’s a strong woman.”

“American Idiot” tells the story of three boyhood friends who are searching for meaning in a post-Sept. 11 world.

“They’re kind of upset with their lives in suburbia,” DiPalma said. “So they decide to leave and go to the city to have a new adventure.”

A single-act, completely sung-through musical, “American Idiot” features hit songs from Green Day, including “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday,” and of course, “American Idiot.”
